On September 13th

Mittwoch, 09. Sep 2009

On September 13th (and on the 14th) I will perform the world premiere of "Requiem for Piano, String Orchestra and Membranophone", which the Taiwanese-Austrian composer Shih dedicated to me.

Else Lasker-Schüler's poem "Weltende" (World's End) of 1904 provided the motto for Shih's concerto.

Es ist ein Weinen in der Welt,
Als ob der liebe Gott gestorben wär,
Und der bleierne Schatten, der niederfällt,
Lastet grabesschwer.

Komm, wir wollen uns näher verbergen...
Das Leben liegt in aller Herzen
Wie in Särgen.

Du! wir wollen uns tief küssen -
Es pocht eine Sehnsucht an die Welt,
An der wir sterben müssen.

Shih's Requiem seems to express hope to me, representing a release, since he manages to "overtake" the expressionistic hopelessness of the poem, to transpose it to the next level, and to portray the search for serenity, the struggle of one's ego with the world and oneself, as not futile.
Open end...

I will begin my search within his colorful structure of sound, and can hardly wait for the first rehearsal and the first concert - in which I go into battle with my own ego and the world, the orchestra!

You may be wondering

No concerts listed? What‘s up with that?

No worries: I have not retired or moved to the other end of the world.

I am taking a sabbatical to finally finish the novel I have been writing for a long time now. N.W. (my main character) rightly keeps reminding me that her story needs to be told and I am the one responsible for getting it out there. I think she’s got a point. I have given in… and will keep you up to date, so watch this space!
